Amelia Island Fishing Tips

The Ten Cent Line Stripper

This cheap and easy line stripper will save you some time stripping line off a reel when you want to replace it.

Drill a hole in the top of a plastic water bottle (or Coke bottle) and insert a quarter inch bolt into the hole, with a flat washer on either side of the top. Tighten it up with a nut.

Screw the top back onto the bottle, and chuck the bolt in a cordless drill.

Tie the end of the line to be removed from the reel around the bottle (or tape it on with masking tape) and loosen the drag on the reel.

Start the drill turning (slowly), and guide the line onto the center of the bottle with your other hand. Speed things up when you get the line coming off smoothly.

Pay attention to how much line is left on the reel; if you hit the end when you aren't watching, things come to a screeching halt.

When the line is off the reel, you can tape over it with masking tape and toss it in the trash with no worries about it causing problems at the dump. Save the cap for next time - just use a fresh bottle.

You can also use this method to move line from one reel to another; poke a hole in the bottom of the bottle for a pencil and have someone hold the pencil/bolt while you crank the line back onto another reel.

A bad day of fishing is much better than a good day of cutting the grass.
